Veith House

A multifaceted community hub offering a variety of resources to people located in the North End of Kijipuktuk.

The following information is sourced from an interview facilitated by the Ladle in August 2022, as part of our community outreach project to connect community kitchen spaces in Kjipuktuk.

“How can we make it happen? Let's invent a way.”

Lisa Harrison - Executive Director at Veith House

Our History

In 2015, conversation at a North End Community Circle gathering inspired the development of community kitchen at Veith House. The space was being used as an office at the time and it became apparent that its convergence to a collective kitchen space would be a supportive resource for the community. Shortly after, the commercial kitchen licensing process began. For Veith House, this involved a grant application to purchase an industrial sanitizer/dishwasher to accompany the kitchen amenities that already existed in the space.

COMMUNITY KITCHEN TIPS

  1. Establish a solid scheduling system!

  2. If you are interested in renting out your kitchen space, ensure your rates are a reflection of the resources you offer.

  3. Be diligent about liability insurance for everyones’ protection.

  4. Having a solid ventilation system! Especially in a multipurpose building, folks can be sensitive to smells.
